Escape From Puppy Death Factory is my favorite Adult Swim game to date – even sweaty, nude car people can’t beat this mix of adorabubble puppies and smart design around an innovative block-swapping mechanic. Glen “Radix” Forrester developed the mechanic for Ssshifty and collaborated with Arthur Lee on early versions of Puppy Death Factory before the two split amicably and Arthur took control of the project. This game definitely includes all of the hallmarks of Arthur’s designs: funny dialogue, catchy tunes, and a cute nod to a classic game (Metroid, in this case).
The canine hero of Puppy Death Factory can fire a shot that swaps her position with whatever block it hits. There are some neat, timing-intensive applications of this, like flying through a line of blocks by swapping quickly with one after the other. Other obstacles – like moving platforms, laser beams, bombs, and mirrors – add depth to the puzzles, some of which are quite clever. Overall, it’s not a tremendously difficult game, but going for 100% completion offers a moderate challenge and it’s fun swapping your way through the game’s desolate locales to hear what each lovable pooch has to say when you rescue it.
Alastair John Jack has released his platformer Arvoesine as freeware. The game originally cost $5.

Starting at the Toronto Game Jam, Station 37 was recently released after two months of further development. The game, developed by FrankieSmileShow and The Monster King, with music by Chef Boyardee, plays like a love-letter to Super Nintendo games complete with panning cutscenes and stage intros. You play a firefighter, and must go around burning buildings rescuing civilians and axing obstacles. While the later levels throw some interesting mechanics in to the mix, the introductory level sadly drags on a little too long without introducing anything new.
I would say it’s worth playing for the less formulaic late-game, and Frankie’s art is pretty striking, but it certainly requires a bit of patience.
Fotonica is a first-person, on-rails, one-button platform game (that’s a mouthful) by Santa Ragione. It was released recently as “pay-what-you-want” (minimum of $1.75). The game features 5 levels, two-player splitscreen, and cross-platform online leaderboards. You can try the demo here, on Kongregate.

Momodora II is a Cave Story-inspired Metroidvania by rdein. You play Momo, a shrine maiden that’s been sent to defeat the Underworld Queen using a leaf and playing cards. It’s a short but charming game.
The soundtrack, by Elektrobear, is available here. The original game can be downloaded here.
